Back in the early 1920's, J. Champane Sr. realized hard work, quality, and service was the formula for success. From selling candy and chewing gum door to door, he eventually was able to purchase a truck, expanding his selling territory. As the business grew, he open a small retail store. The front of the store was set up for selling candy, gum, and baked goods, and he used the back of the store to repair roasting equipment. He then began to roast fresh peanuts as well as assorted nut products. From working eighteen hour days seven days a week, he created and perfected a unique roasting process for his products. In using this process, the nuts and snacks were so fresh, crisp, and full of flavor, that the word spread quickly and soon the customers were waiting in lines to taste his delicious products.
By the mid 1930's he opened additional stores. He chose the name "Variety Nut and Candy Co." and once again the nuts became a smashing success. The demand was so great, that he began packaging the products and soon they were sold from the trucks door to door and on street corners throughout the town. The snacks became known as "Pic-A-Nut" brand, a tradition of quality shared by millions still.
As the business grew, he started to import products and manufacture new food related products.
| By the 1940's, the company was the first in the nation to start assembling commercial Easter baskets for retail, along with the seasonal candies and nuts. Customers around the town recognized "Pic-A-Nut", "Old Favorite Candies", and "Sun Ray" products as household words.
The company changed its name to "Variety Nut and Date Co." and operated from a processing plant on the eastside of town. The packaging line was joined by vacuum packing jars and cans.
With the birth of super markets, "Pic-A-Nut" was present from the beginning, offering excellent quality and full service.
Today with many new product lines and brand names, the company name is "Variety Foods, Inc." Operating several plant locations with warehouses and distributing national.
To this day, as in the past, our products bare the same brand names from the "Pic-A-Nut" signature series of "PRIVATE STOCK" to the "RESERVE STOCK". All of our products are made with personalized dedication for high standards of quality. We select only the finest and freshest ingredients from top growers in the USA and around the world.
